What is blockprinting?
Block printing is a traditional relief printing technique with a long history. In my practice, I carve the design into a linoleum or wooden block and remove everything I do not want to print. Then I roll oil based ink onto the surface, allowing only the raised areas to hold the ink while the carved lines stay blank. Because the block works like a stamp, I carve the image in reverse so it prints correctly on paper. After inking the block, I transfer the image with pressure. I love way of creating so much because combines craftsmanship and art.
Each impression carries small variations, which give block printing its distinctive, handmade character. This hands on process encourages a slow, thoughtful approach and a close connection to material and technique.
